My dear friend
I am always so happy to read your letters because they reassure me that you are doing well. My health is not bad, now that my arm is nearly back to normal. Monday I hope to begin composing for Venice, my librettist having promised to consign the introduzione. - The story concerns Christina, Queen of Sweden, taken from Dumas. It seems interesting and I'm hoping for something good, coming as it will from the likes of Romani, my fine and favorite librettist. -
I'm delighted to hear that it takes just a few notes of my music for the public to be moved and for my friends to remember me. - I'll send along the Tantum ergo to the good nuns of S. Caterina the first chance I get. - You'll find here a short note I've included for Gallo; meanwhile remember me to the Ninfo family, Peranna, and maestro Monteleone, as well as Pepé, Ottavio, Baroncino, [...] along with all of the old guard. I'll leave the letter to Gallo open so that you can read what I've written to him and then press the issue with him yourself. I'm hoping you might have a word with the Duca di Sammartino about the resolution from the City Council of Catania to coin a medal in my honor and provide a pension for my father. He told me at the time that a favorable report had been sent from his secretary to Naples, but they've informed me now from Naples that these papers have not arrived at the Ministry of the Interior. I don't know what to do next and would appreciate whatever reliable information you can give me.
