Londra 16: maggio 33:

Mio caro Lamperi

(My current address) Mr. Bellini 3 Old Burlington Street

London 16 May 33

My dear Lamperi

Your anxiously awaited letter finally came with news of our friends and theatrical affairs. I was quite sad to learn of your illness, observing that the influenza, as that epidemic disease is called, must have something to do with extraordinary weather conditions, unlike cholera. Here too it came down to little more than three days of discomfort with coughing and fever, but now that the weather is beautiful it has completely subsided and no one speaks of influenza anymore. Meanwhile my friends in Milan have become ill just like you, which suggests it lingers there because it has been unseasonably cold. - I had developed a strong cough during the steamboat journey from Calais to London which has largely disappeared, though a bit remains; but the doctor did not call it influenza because it was never accompanied by fever. - Thank you for the trouble you've taken and continue to take regarding L. I hope to receive a response to my letter with some explanation for that unexpected event you witnessed. If I come to Turin we can have a laugh over it together.

I see that Consul has taken on too many obligations this year to be able to commission an opera, but he'll still have to bear some cost just to have me supervise the production of Norma (provided the chorus is good), since I told you I couldn't come to Turin for less than three thousand francs. Tell Consul in the meantime not to obtain the score for Norma from anyone but Lanari, whose terms will be the same as the ones he negotiated with Genoa: that is, rental of the score and parts for the orchestra, singers, and choruses for 850 francs. He can get the information about this contract from Marchesi, the impresario in Genoa. Should he choose otherwise, any other score he finds will have been orchestrated by someone else.

Let me know about all of this business with the theatre, because I have to work out certain arrangements with Paris: in other words (but keep it to yourself for now), the administration of the Grand Opéra is actively seeking a commitment from me to write for that theatre. I'll give them my answer in July when I'm there (that is, around mid-month), and even if this opera won't be wanted until the next autumn season after this one, I'll still need to know what obligations I'll have during the year to determine when I return to Italy, understood?... Now for my news from London. There's no use even trying to describe this city to you: suffice it to say it's the most important in the world, comparable only to the fabulously rich Tyre of antiquity. -  My Sonnambula was performed in English at the Drury Lane Theatre, with a most tasteful interpretation by M.me Malibran as protagonist. The opera has caused quite a frenzy, which only grows greater with time.

Pasta has appeared in Anna Bolena and Medea so far, and she's been phenomenally acclaimed for her performance in both, with London finding her even stronger and younger in voice than before. My first impression of Malibran compared to Pasta must wait until I can tell you in person: for now I can only say that the latter is second to none, especially in her sublime rendition of tragedy. -

Two weeks from today there's a benefit performance for Rubini of Il pirata, which will be sung by Pasta, Rubini, and Tamburini, and in early June there will be one for Pasta of Norma. - I must say I'm enjoying myself immensely here, what with the non-stop whirlwind of balls, plays, dinners, concerts, country visits, etc. etc. I've gotten to know all of London society and consequently receive invitations from everyone, to the point that so much amusement becomes nearly suffocating. Since I don't know the language and am unfamiliar with the streets, I wasn't able to go this morning to see Sig. Conte Nomis di Pollone, but tomorrow I'll pay him a visit and give him this letter to deliver to you. - Moving on then, you can imagine how I've naturally found myself surrounded by a world of beautiful women, and truly heavenly ones at that; but since they all look for an emotional attachment, which is hardly possible for someone who has to leave the country in two months' time, I'm determined to favor friendship over love so that I don't run the risk of ending up with a wife. -

Farewell my dear Lamperi. I'll write you with my latest as often as I can, as will you. Sig.ra Pasta and her husband send their cordial greetings, and I extend a thousand more to your gracious wife, the Bilotti couple, the Grosson family, and to that charming young thing who talks about me with you, etc. etc.

But why have you made no mention of Cossato? I want vindication by having you tell him how unhappy I am that he did not remember to have you include his salutations for me. Give him my fond regards and tell me how he's doing. My respects to everyone in the Barabino family when you see them, and tell Remondini, to whom I send my affectionate best wishes, to keep you abreast of news about Lucchina which you can send along to me.  Farewell my dear friend, with a warm embrace from your Bellini -
