M’affretto ad esprimerti la mia grande soddisfazione riguardo al Duetto che questa mattina ricevei dalla posta.
Qualche cosa, ma piccola assai, è necessario ritoccare; ma l’insieme è magnifico, come per l’interesse sommo che hai fatto alla situazione, come alla dicitura, che non può essere, né più chiara, né più più scelta. Bravo D:n Carluccio!!!
Tu mi hai dato nuova vita! Non posso negarti che un dubbio mi tormentava sempre, ed era crederti assai nudo di dire passionato nel dialogo, e nell’istesso tempo non prolisso e chiaro. Aspettava questo duetto per accertarmi, o far disparire i miei timori: lo lessi, ed il mio cuore s’aprì a speranza alta; ed ora non vedo nel tuo componimento che un’opera degna del nome che le tue Poesie t’hanno meritato. – Domani non vengo a Tivoli \Rivoli/ o place Louis 15: troverai l’Omnibus Orleanesses ed altre vetture che tutti i 10: minuti passano; mettiti in viaggio, che potrai ritornartene a Parigi anche a nove ore ½ se vorrai, partendo da Puteaux tali vetture sino alle 10: ore della sera \(e mettono sino a parigi 20: minuti/. Vieni dunque che ti aspetto. Oggi spero finire di mettere in partitura l’introduzione; ma dubito che l’Inno di Guerra è di troppo e penso che potrai piazzarlo, nel corso dell’opera se la situazione lo domandi, in caso che veramente fosse superfluo ove si trova; per io avere, con ragione, fatto un coro principale \del/ Quando la tromba squilla ec:

I just wanted to let you know straight away that I'm immensely pleased with the duetto I received in the mail this morning.
Some tiny detail will need adjustment but altogether you've done magnificent work, both for the dramatic interest, which is outstanding, and for the text itself, which couldn't be more clear or more elegantly fashioned. Bravo Don Carluccio!!!
You've given me new life! I must confess one doubt had always tormented me, which was that your dialogue would be extremely short on passion and at the same time too prolix and insufficiently clear, and this duetto was what I awaited to either confirm or dispell my fears. As I read it my heart filled with hope, and now I see nothing less than a work worthy of the reputation your poetry has earned you. - I won't be coming to Paris tomorrow, which would be useless since I already have enough poetry for now; but do come here if you can on Sunday or Monday to discuss a number of things, and then stay afterward for lunch with us. Go to Rue de Rivoli or Place Louis XV, where you'll find the Omnibus Orleanesses and other public carriages that pass every 10 minutes; the one you'll take for the trip here will also bring you back to Paris even as late as 9:30 if you like, since the last one leaving from Puteaux is at 10:00 in the evening and the return journey is 20 minutes. Come then, I'll be waiting for you. Today I hope to finish setting out the score of the introduzione, but I'm afraid the "Inno di Guerra" will be too much because I logically made "Quando la tromba squilla" etc. a principal chorus. Nonetheless, should it prove truly superfluous where it is now, I think you'll be able to position it elsewhere in the opera if the situation calls for it.
