My most beloved Friend
Just a short message for now to inform you that on 31 January I was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur by H.M. the King of France, that your friend is content, and that such prestigious honors encourage him all the more to strive for ever greater excellence as his career progresses. - So then: Long live Sicily and her native sons. -
Drink to my health when next you dine, and I will drink to yours here. - I leave you now because I'm going to the Court to see the Queen and offer her the dedication of I puritani, which continues to be all the rage. Tell me if Rossini has written to you, and do me the favor of letting him know that I've told you how indebted I am to him now for his advice etc. etc. — in short, we must cultivate his friendship even to the point of annoying him in the process. - My best wishes to all of our friends - I'll write you at length in another letter; meanwhile I extend a warm embrace and invite you to share in my extreme happiness. Farewell
Yours fondly
Bellini
Please give this news to the Duchessa di Sammartino, who has been so very kind to me, and extend my respects together with those for her husband etc. etc. and the venerable princess of Cassaro - farewell
